Marcie Roth is the National
Spinal Cord Injury Association’s (NSCIA) Executive Director and CEO. She assumed
this role in January, 2002 after spending several years as the Director of
Advocacy and Public Policy for the National Council on Independent Living, and
prior to that, as the Director of Governmental Affairs for TASH, an
international disability rights organization.
Ms. Roth’s background in disability services, rights, grassroots organizing,
coalition building and public policy work began in the early 1970’s. She has
been active as a local, state and national leader, and has been involved in
senior management activities for several national and international non-profit
disability organizations over the past twenty years, managing multiple projects
and leading public policy initiatives simultaneously.
Currently leading national public/private efforts to address the additional
needs of people with disabilities before, during and after disasters, she
co-chairs the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities Emergency Management and
International Task Forces and also serves on the National Citizen Corps
Subcommittee on Individuals with Disabilities in Emergency Preparedness. Ms.
Roth was commended by the White House for her efforts on behalf of New Yorkers
with disabilities in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks, served as a
private sector incident manager in addressing the additional needs of hurricane
Katrina and Rita survivors and has served as a disability expert for Congress,
the US Department of Homeland Security, the US Department of Health and Human
Services, US Department of Justice and other national and federal entities
regarding emergency preparedness and disaster response and recovery. She has
demonstrated her commitment to emergency preparedness and response in her own
community, by serving on the Montgomery County Maryland Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT). Roth is also very involved in global disability efforts,
providing assistance to leaders in the Middle East on disability issues and
representing the United States in 2006 and 2007 at international forums on the
rights and needs of children with disabilities.
Ms. Roth is a recent graduate of Leadership Greater Washington. She is President
of the Board of Directors of Access Information, Inc., serves on the Executive
Board of Directors of the National Coalition for Disability Rights and is a
private sector contributor in the development and implementation of the Surgeon
General’s recent “Call to Action to Improve the Health and Wellness of Persons
with Disabilities”.
Ms. Roth has personal experience living with a disability and she is the parent
of two children with disabilities and challenging support needs. She brings her
commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities
to her work in partnering with other disability groups to build local, regional
and national strength as a collective grassroots force, united towards a common
goal of greater opportunity and independence for all people with disabilities.
