About This Conference

The threat of pandemic disease, terrorist attacks, mass casualty events or the use of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high explosive (CBRNE) weapons of mass destruction (WMD) have created a complex operational environment across the spectrum of the medical community.  From first responders providing initial support to an affected population, all the way up to strategic-level planners formulating response strategies for federal, state and regional planning teams, medical disaster response is a central piece of the nationwide homeland security mission.

Federal, state, local and private providers of medical services must continue planning for their role in the consequence management mission, a mission where success will be heavily dependent on the ability of the medical community to create a seamless architecture of response and support across the operational continuum.

The Medical Aspects of Disaster Management Conference will bring together leading experts in the field of medical planning and consequence management in order to assist federal, state, local and private stakeholders to become better informed in the event of a medical disaster.  Through discussion of recent events and lessons learned from responders and medical experts' experiences in the field, attendees will learn the tools needed to help shape their organization's role in the medical consequence management mission.  Speakers include members of federal, state, local and academia who have on-site experience leading and coordinating medical response in events such as the 9/11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the Tokyo Sarin attacks and the Polonium poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko.  Attendees will conclude the conference with an interactive roundtable discussion that will cover the elements needed to write an emergency preparedness medical plan and how to conduct training exercises based on plans already in place.  This interactive, facilitated, discussion will allow conference attendees to walk away with a readiness plan, or revisions to their respective agency or organization's current plan.

By using real world examples in an interactive setting, this conference is a must attend for anyone involved in disaster management and medical first response.

Speakers will focus on the following areas:

  • Supplies and equipment needed for effective medical response

  • Lessons learned from recent chemical and biological attacks

  • Lessons learned from bombings and other terrorist attacks

  • Lessons learned from weather-related and other natural disasters

  • What you should be thinking about regarding surge capacity and stockpiling

  • Coordinating state, local and federal medical response

  • Working with government agencies to ensure successful emergency response plans

  • Best practices in medical planning and response to disasters, terrorism and epidemics

  • Moving forward with your medical readiness plan

  • Using information technology in support of disaster response

  • The role of faith-based organizations following disasters
